Situated in tight confines reminiscent of most urban Residential development across the country, the site for the Stack House was narrow and long with four and five storey constructions on all sides making the front Facade the only means of establishing an identity for the project.
Designed as a retirement home for a couple and their 3 daughters, the volumetric idea takes shape as a series of staggered terraces allowing the building to step away from the Street front and giving the Residence a unique aesthetic identity. The staggering creates large balconies/terraces for the Bedrooms in the front, while the ones at the rear are staggered in plan to create smaller enclosed balconies for the younger daughters.
The exposed brick and concrete materiality further distinguishes the Residence from its neighbours, which when combined with it’s non-Facade making it easily recognisable from a distance and a unique modern addition to the neighbourhood.
The Sectional staggering of the Residence ensures that while the Built-up area is around 2,200 sqft, it is balanced out by a comparable 1,100 sqft of Terrace/Balcony space nad making the Four storey residence seem less imposing to the clients and visitors alike. The side facades are kept deliberately blank to prevent neighbours from looking into the House, affording them privacy. The monotonous nature of the blank Facade is broken up by screens and pockets which house the supporting Services needed to keep the Residence functioning comfortably.
